It was founded in 1965 by guitarist Rudolf Schenker and drummer Wolfgang Dziony. In the beginning, Rudolf was lead singer of the group until the new year 1970, the younger brother of Rudolf Schenker and guitarist Michael, along with former vocalist Klaus Meine Copernicus enter the band. [4] From the beginning, Klaus and Rudolf decided to write in English because it was the only way to become known to Western Europe. In this way the following year they released their first single "I'm Going Mad / Action" published in Germany alone. [21] Following the positive reception simple, sign a record contract with Brain Records to work on recording in 1972 by the producer Conny Plank, the first LP entitled Lonesome Crow. With this album out on tour for 136 days a West German cities opening for Uriah Heep and Rory Gallagher. The output of the Schenker under the band took a break. Rudolf Uli invited to join the band as lead guitarist, as it had in the last tour, but he rejected the proposal preferring to stay in the band which played Dawn Road. Rudolf was very enthusiastic to work with Roth, but with less spirit of "reviving" the Scorpions, so he joined Dawn Road tests and later joined as an active member of this. The other band members were the aforementioned Uli Jon Roth on guitar, Jurgen Rosenthal on drums and Francis Buchholz on bass and Achim Kirschning on the keyboard. [22] Although not wanting to return to the old line, Roth Schenker convinces Klaus Meine to join the band. This access and this completes the training. Despite having more members of Dawn Road than Scorpions, decided to continue using the name of the latter as it was known in the German music scene. [4]

The special technique of Uli Jon Roth marked the band's sound during the following years and became the third songwriter of the duo behind Schenker / Meine, and even as lead vocalist on certain songs. With this line out on tour with the British Sweet in 1973, returning to record their second recording Fly to the Rainbow in 1974 with their new label RCA Records. After the tour, the band members would become friends of the British and their songs, so they decide to record 2 songs for the vinyl Fuchs Geh 'Voran (English Fox On The Run) played in German and under a pseudonym because people did not want it relate this to the band's albums, but rather fun, it was The Hunters. After the departure of Roth, comes another young German guitarist Matthias Jabs, who begins the journey to the U.S. market with the 1979 album Lovedrive getting gold. In the same line would follow the disks Animal Magnetism, 1980, 1982, Blackout, Love at First Sting 1984, Savage Amusement 1988. With these studies demonstrated a more powerful sound and commercial, which earned them worldwide recognition. [11]

Later in the decade after World Crazy disks and Face the Heat the rose to the rank of most successful German band, but lived the retirement of two of its members and Francis Buchholz Herman Rarebell. But they learned to remove the disc reinvent Pure Instinct and Eye II Eye which showed a renewed sound and even softer touch in his career. Once in the new millennium, the project symphonic Moment of Glory and Acoustica unplugged places on the list again, as heavy rock discs Unbreakable 2004 and Humanity: Hour I 2007. [11]

Currently the band is on his farewell tour with his latest studio album Sting in the Tail, which announced on its website as the beginning of the end of the road that will take him to five continents over the next three years. [12]

Throughout his career of more than 40 years, they have released dozens of singles, live albums, compilations and some live DVD and have received several international awards, which makes them the most successful rock band from Germany [13].

Sales of the band are among the 100 [14] [15] [16] and 150 [17] [18] million albums worldwide, of which 10.5 million have been sold in the United States. [19]

In 2011 the German trade press estimated sales of the band at 160 million albums sold worldwide.
